even though I love new music, I find myself listening to the same stuff over and over. curious about how many times I'd heard "Cool Jerk," recently, since it seems like I hear it all the effing time, I sorted my music by "plays." now, there is some discrepancy about what counts as a "play." theories abound. also, some songs I have obviously listened to have "zero" plays. no comprendo. i don't know how it works or when iTunes starts counting, and i suspect that when you update iTunes, you lose all your previous plays.

okay, not writing. but some paper. the ex moved out and all his show posters and cool album covers came off the wall. blank walls bother me something awful, i cannot look at them and they make me feel sad, anxious and empty, but being short on cash i couldn't invest in any cool visuals or framing.

i turned to blockposters.com, where you can upload a jpeg and then print a giant PDF mosaic.

i started with this image:

i printed black and white copies at kinko's fedex office or whatever it's called because they are cheaper to print and my printer is out of ink. i also purchased a whole bunch of command poster strips.

it turned out pretty cool so i did it again over the bed in the bedroom. color printouts this time. big spender!

next i think i'll do this image, across from the bed, so i can wake up and see what i really care about: booze and shoes.

i walked into H&M today and everything was so light and fresh and gauzy and girly and flirty and frilly and springtime. i was wearing my huge wookie boots and a coat and a hat and gloves and a scarf and a scowl. the snow can't stop won't stop! despite my cold miser ensemble i wanted to try on frothy pink dresses and wonderland-worthy polka-dot heels. but the clothes there don't fit me and the heels didn't come in my size and we are months away from the kind of weather which allows pretty. i bought socks and left.

when i was a small curly-haired kid around two or three years old, i took tap. oh, how i loved to tap. whenever my mary janes hit wood or marble floors i would just tappa tappa tappa. around the same time i fell in love with shirley temple. i'd order shirley temples, watch heidi and poke my fingernails into my cheeks, desperately trying to create dimples. recently i looked up a couple of shirley temple videos and discovered i still love her (or the idea of her). deeply. flower in the hair!!!

when life is stable and steady it can be nice yet dull. when life is a roller coaster twisting and turning and looping around, it can be exciting, but accompanied by dizziness and nausea.

we all have our patterns.

some things persist.

i was reading the interview with Michael Alig from earlier this year and thinking, wow, the things i've seen. growing up in new york in the 80s and 90s. i love my friends, love them, but they're mostly new to my life… no one can even understand what it was like, really. it's impossible to even describe. making out with some dude from humanities at marc ballroom, seeing andy warhol at the flea market on columbus avenue, shopping at patricia field on 8th street, seeing terence trent d'arby at the world when you're underage and there's mystery liquid dripping from the ceiling. the koch years, the dinkins years. cbgb, limelight, the tunnel, sticky mike's frog bar, club usa and a whole bunch of other places that don't exist any more… my homes away from home. palladium is an NYU dorm now, the amazing pool hall on that block, Julian's? long gone. Trader Joe's moved in. but it used to be a city of gritty hide outs, nooks and crannies. more mixing, more diversity. most nights out, you were likely to see a drag queen, russell simmons or both. free booze at outlaw parties, making friends with weed dealers in the meadow, $2 whiskey sours at howard johnson's in times square. no one remembers. i remember.

but we all have our patterns.

we all have scenes that get replayed. sometimes the characters are the same but the backdrop is different, sometimes the characters are new, the setting is new, but the words are the same. the things you try and run away from follow you. what you resist will persist. there are only 36 plots in the world.

my pattern, my go-to scene, the monologue i have memorized, the clip that will always, always make it into the director's cut is this: i want more. i always want more. bigger better faster richer farther hotter. and, all praises due to the voodoo priestes: happier. happier. and i can't stop won't stop, even though i'm exhausted and everyone's gone.

completely unrelated: pomade has officially made a comeback. i thought it was just the boys in my little galaxy, but it's definitely a thing. dudes doing dax daily. it looks good, i'll give 'em that. but damn if it doesn't stain a girl's pillowcase. ask yourself this, ladies: is it worth it?

friday night i had drinks at the plaza, where i haven't been in a million years, even though as a child i wanted to live there, like eloise, and my highschool prom was held there. on the way home i walked by gainsborough studios.

there are certain nyc buildings with which i am obsessed. gainsborough studios, located at 222 central park south, is one of them.

built in 1905, the top of the building has colored moravian tiles on the façade, a bust of landscape artist thomas gainsborough above the entryway as well as an "allegorical frieze" depicting people involved in the arts.

according to nyc architecture the building has "only 34 apartments, most with spectacular, double-height living rooms facing north towards Central Park."

candice bergen used to live there, and her apartment was on the cover of architectural digest in june of 1979… which, I believe, may have been the month and year i moved to nyc as a kid.

the images from that 1979 issue of AD happen to be online, and holy mother of manhattan is that some real estate porn. jesus chrysler building.

i posted these images from h&m magazine today, and not everyone was loving the illustrations by Lisolette Watkins. i think they're amazing. i went to the tim burton exhibit at moma over the weekend, and what burton and watkins have in common is a defined style. when you look a tim burton's stuff, you know it's him; same here. do i have this in my writing, i wonder? do i need it? anyway, visual stimulation is always good. i used to read drawn! all the time, maybe i should start up again.

the space above the television has been just a plain white wall for the past 11 months we've lived in this apartment. the rug is a rectangle, the TV is a rectangle, the couch is a rectangle and all the of the framed pieces above the couch are squares or right angles. i really wanted something with curves to go above the TV. at first i thought i might do something round, but gradually realized i was dying to have my own neon sign -- in a curly, cursive script. there are tons of sign stores in this neighborhood, and it's expensive, but not as expensive as i thought it might be. once our custom sign was done, the boyfriend and his handy drill made it happen.

it's amazing. and it looks better than it photographs.

all i have to decide now is whether to paint the wires white.

as for the bedroom: no progress.

I'm pretty sad about alexander mcqueen's death. i wrote something here and here. i regret not buying all the things he made that i really wanted to buy, including the damn skull scarf. i hate that being a creative visionary so often goes hand-in-hand with being tortured. and i'm sad that whatever future projects he and gaga were cooking up won't come to fruition. today sucked.

while watching TV last night, i saw this mcdonald's commercial where, for a split second, some dude was in a reception area with a groovy metal globe on the wall.

did i rewind and take a picture of the screen? yes. yes, i did.

cool, right? retro TWA terminal chic! anyway, i googled "metal globe sculpture." and i totally found it. six hundred bucks.

i suspect it might look better on a black wall as opposed to a white wall, but i am looking for something "interesting" and NOT square or rectangular to hang over the TV. other ideas: marquee letters.

i can type without looking, i can look without leaping. muscle memories mean the nerves respond without thinking. your heart is a muscle the size of your fist says the postcard i never mailed. i'm holding it, i hold on and i don't let go. building a nest (magpie style) out of printed words and things that shine, so i can have something i can tell is mine.

six moths ago i swore if my life were a broadway play it would be lay miz. i claimed if my life were a beastie boys song it would be sabotage. that was the winter of my discontent. i was playing the percussion instruments called the doldrums. but seriously folks.

recently i went to bed drunk and high on the potent elixir of text messages. floating on love transmitted electronically 160 characters at a time. i dreamed i was a lego character, my lower east side apartment a set you could buy and configure as you pleased. everything is colorful, everything snaps together. these days my life is more like the title of a number from hair; let the sunshine in, at best. white boys, at worst*. not bad either way. still not oklahoma (o, what a beautiful morning), but a girl can dream. it's still early in the week.

maybe you heard that italian designer gianfranco ferré* died. i recently visited his website. steel yourself and check it out:

for the spring/summer ad campaign, not only is GFF using a black (!) model, she's not the light-skinned, wilting flower you so often see. she's dark-skinned, with a strong jaw, a haughty, "wtf you looking at" royal expression, and you get the feeling she could - and would like to - kick your ass. she's accessorized by a sexy terrorist who clearly does her bidding. together they paint a seductively threatening picture that made me forget why i went to the site in the first place (just admiring the sunglasses, your majesty, may i be excused?)

*(gianfranco ferré is like, such a sexy name! it begs to be whispered in the dark on a yacht in the mediterranean... gianfranco? ferré!).

friday i found myself at the legendary hit factory studios, where artists like madonna, u2, john lennon and stevie wonder have recorded. but because everything in new york is destined to turn into something else, the space is gonna be condos, sigh.

still, the gibson studio is a nice space, and i was excited to see my sexy friends the roughstars.

cornelius had on a leopard tie; i was wearing leopard jeans. great minds think alike.

so at my birthday party, i had four piñatas.

an ice cream cone, a guitar, a turtle and a darth vader head.

we cracked open all of them except darth vader - i was saving him for last - but then when i decided it was time to whack vader, he was gone. he vanished!
