delancey street F station

i have been living on the LES for about 6 years now, and the F station has been under construction the entire time. lately some of the secret stuff they've been working on has been revealed: mosaics. fish, fish heads and waves on the downtown/brooklyn side; cherry trees and cherries on the uptown/queens side.

bullseye!

over the weekend, my friend rachael and i had blueberry pancakes, then joined the 6 million other people at the new target in brooklyn. it was kind of like some bizarre anthropological experiment. everyone had one eye on the reasonably priced merchandise and the other on the mixed-bag crowd. the brooklyn kids were mesmerized by the shopping-cart only escalator (so was i) and i actually heard a woman pick up something and say, "it has a matte finish! that's nice."

bullseye!

hmmmm...

while in target, i saw this: a $400 scooter.

cute, right?

except there was a sign on it that said

"this vehicle is not for use on public streets, roads, highways or bridges."

uh, this is new york.

what are you supposed to do with it?
ride it in circles around your luxurious brooklyn apartment?

either it was inventory that was supposed to have gone to a store in the suburbs or target is condoning lawlessness.

either way, i'm annoyed. isn't target supposed to be for the masses? why show us things we can't have? that's what Dior is for.

hmmmm...

king of crunk

i just interviewed lil jon!

he was pretty funny. i was asking him if he'd seen any good movies or DVDs lately and he was all, "i don't even think i can tell you..." in that awesome scratchy voice. damn! now that i think about it, i should have asked him who does his fronts. oh well...

the state of denmark

last night jason @ tvt records invited me to check out a band called the blue van. they're adorable danes ("coming at you straight from copenhagen!") and every single one of them had on the absolute tightest jeans i've ever seen. plus the bass player had on these slick glasses that i thought only architects wore. what's going on in denmark? [hopefully it's not low sperm counts.] the good news is, the band rocks. catchy, sort of retro rock, with a blues influence (they were even channeling muddy waters). it's like somebody put the doors, the kinks, the monkees, and the hives in a blender, sprinkled it with zeppelin, shipped the concoction to scandinavia and poured it into a pair of tight jeans. delicious!

taking pictures of the TV

i love taking pictures of the TV, especially when i'm watching a movie. sometimes the way things are framed - the way the director has filled the space - is so smart and right that i have to pause the DVD and grab my camera.

recently i watched sweet smell of success again, and it's such a great film. new york looks so pretty in black and white, and there are some amazing lines. like when susie tries to break up with steve by giving him some lame excuse and he says, "susie, that's fish four days old - i won't buy it!" also, having a black rotary phone brought to your table when you're in a restaurant is so much more civilized than reaching in your pocket for a cell.

"gentlemen, i'm toasting my favorite new perfume... the sweet smell of success."

ramps and amps

the ramps and amps event at south street seaport on saturday was great! lots of breath taking, gravity-defying stunts and adorably scraped, bruised, dirt-covered, sweaty boys. fabulous.

on fire

since katie couric was pawing shirtless firemen on morning television yesterday, the new FDNY calendar must be out. some of the guys are pretty hot; some just need to cease and desist with the tweezing of the eyebrows. honestly. my question is this: raising money for charity is all very good, but does anyone worry that some desperate single woman is going to take one look at these rippling abs and deliberately set something on fire? not only are you likely to survive a tiny, contained blaze in your bathroom wastebasket, but the chances that you'll meet mr. june seem reasonable.

not that i'm planning anything. seriously.

his purpleness

last night i went to see prince @ MSG. it's hard to believe that the man is 46 years old. he was jumping around in his high heels, singing his heart out, dancing like a fiend. his voice sounded amazing and the acoustic version of little red corvette was so sexy, so sad, so beautiful, that i actually felt faint.

i hate to get all astrological, but notice how prince does not appear to age? that's a gemini thing. johnny depp's a gemini, too. does he look 41? i think not. in any case, i am going to have to go out and buy a whole bunch of prince CDs now because i'd forgotten how amazing he is. and a lot of my prince collection is (wince!) on cassette. jeez. how very retro. and not in a good way.
