so the late princess of wales loves the college dropout.
and you know what? so do i. i like the direction he's going in. sure, he's years behind björk when it comes to retrofutureasianrobot themes, but at least he's not stuck in the bikinis and benjamins school of hiphop videos.

one question - when he asks me to be his "black kate moss" - is he asking me to:

b. snort coke
c. design affordable separates for topshop

this old world is a new world

yesterday morning i texted hrh:
me: i woke up with iPhone phever!
hrh: paging dr. jobs, paging dr. jobs.
then last night on spring street i saw two people sitting on chairs in front of the apple store. they're already lining up for the iPhone.
unrelated:
here is a song that reflects my mental state:
nina simone - feeling good
similarly:
muse - feeling good
unrelated:
the white stripes were on conan o'brien last week.
i missed it but caught it; that is the miracle of dvr.

we've got a big big mess on our hands

so when i found out that the academy is was coming to the office i was excited, since i have new crush on lead singer william beckett. but i found myself completely unable to get dressed this morning, and though i am supposed to interview the band, all i really want to do is stare at william. not very professional. we'll see how it goes.

sounds like teen spirit
listen.
i am fully aware that i am an adult, and not a sulky teenager.
and yet.
sometimes i ride the subway with my hoodie hood up, iPod blasting inane pop that soothes the soul or blistering emorock that fuels angst.
and right now is a great time for infectious sugary confections, the silly tracks known as summer anthems. i've worn my amy winehouse and lily allen albums thin; i'm looking for songs to carry me through june.
candidate #1 ; girlfriend - avril lavigne
it's not rocket science or poetry, but it's like she can read my mind.
"hey, hey
you, you!
i don't like your girlfriend!
no way, no way,
i think you need a new one...
hey hey, you you -
i could be your girlfriend!
she's like so whatever
you could do so much better.
i think we should get together...
now."
i mean seriously. i've had this conversation with myself or a friend at least a million times this year and we're less than 6 months in.
candidate #2: lip gloss - lil mama
the estate of marilyn monroe and various marketing departments may want you to believe that diamonds are a girl's best friend, but ask any modern woman what she can't live without on a daily - nay, hourly- basis, and the answer is lip gloss. lil mama is 17 years old and shouts out mac and l'oréal. love her.
(download track here)
candidate #3: girlfriend remix - avril with lil mama
combine these brats and double your pleasure! two great tastes that taste great together!
download by clicking here!
candidate #4: party like a rock star - shop boys
the musical equivalent of candy from a 25¢ bodega vending machine. great and terrible at the same time, bad for you, sort of gross and highly addictive.
"totally, dude."
candidate #5: umbrella - rihanna
i dunno, the song is stupid but kind of hot at the same time, i guess she wants to be the new aaliyah, except ciara has that on lock. rihanna looks good—gorgeous, actually, but at times her voice is super nasal, that's my only complaint. still. i think jay-z is a genius and knows exactly what he is doing as he micromanages her career. the "ay-ay-ay" in this track is annoying at first and then you just succumb to it, it carries you away like a coney island riptide and you enjoy drowning in its repetition.
candidate #6: last night - diddy ft. keyshia cole
three words i always live by: don't doubt diddy.
ok!
this is by no means a definitive list. i'm open to suggestions for great summer songs.
while we're on the subject of teen angst, i watched nowhere for the nth time over the weekend. took pictures because the art direction is killer. i also just love the stilted acting, fast-paced potty-mouthed dialogue and apocalyptic tone. sigh.

well, americans what?
nothing better to do?
why don't you kick yourself out -
you're an immigrant too
who's using who?
what should we do?
well, you can't be a pimp and a prostitute too...

who is the one that leads me on through? it's you.

i went to see patrick wolf last night. imagine if bjork and morrissey had a baby who was raised by members of echo and the bunnymen. patrick came out with crazy black hair, some sort of crocheted halter top and shorts... then he proceed to take off the hair (it was a wig) and the top, so that he was jumping around half-naked, with vibrant red hair, awash in glitter and with a unicorn tattooed above his heart. there were costume changes. he played the theremin, a ukulele, the violin and a keyboard. he called the theremin his best friend and lamented the fact that he couldn't bring a grand piano on tour. the crowd danced, cheered and made howling wolf sounds. his pseudo-morrissey voice sounded amazing. he bounced, he brooded, he pouted, he growled, he spoke shyly, in a clipped britsh accent and just all in all put on a really fun show.

somehow i dialed my cell - i didn't know i could get service in hell
video break!
liam lynch - my united states of whatever
jay brannan - soda shop (song from shortbus)
he talks a lot in the beginning but be patient, the song is super pretty. if you press the tiny "play" arrow at the bottom left corner of the frame and then drag the little button forward to 3:12, please feel free to do so.
so yeah in addition to watching brothers of the head, i watched shortbus on sunday. jay plays "ceth with a c" in shortbus - he's a "model because he hates it." his voice is beautiful...
the movie is famous because the actors actually have sex in it. it's definitely explicit, and there's a LOT of sex, but in the end, it's very emotional, with themes of loneliness, letting go of expectations and creating a space in which you feel safe.
here's the song in context, from shortbus:
and by the way, this is my free will horoscope this week:
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
The Yanyuwa aborigines of northwestern Australia believe that music literally has curative properties. In one traditional method, the healer sings a medicine song directly into the top of the head of the patient. The sound circulates through the body, driving out the illness or unease. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, something resembling this approach could help chase away your current malaise. Do you think you could find a shaman or shaman wannabe to perform the musical "surgery"? If not, do the job yourself. Spend 20 minutes a day singing the most potent healing songs you know into your own head.
Soda Shop
music and lyrics by Jay Brannan
The sidewalk is rushing at my head again
I'm lying on the street in the rain and wind
From doing forward rolls down Avenue A
With my guitar on my back don't let it end this way
Somehow i dialed my cell
I didn't know I could get service in hell
How quickly can you get here
Don't know where I am dear
Finally the world actually seems to be revolving around me
Shoobie doobie doo-wap
I over did it at the soda shop
Thanks for being my girl
At the "I don't know when to stop sock hop"
You held my head over the edge of the bed
I remember it now but at the time I thought I was dead
You put a pan there and held my hair
How can I repay you for saving me and my hardwood floor
Shoobie doobie doo-wap
I over did it at the soda shop
Thanks for being my girl
At the "I don't know when to stop sock hop"
And when the world stops spinning round
I picked the pen up off the ground
I read my up heaves much like tea leaves
They said its over so get sober or you'll die again
Shoobie doobie doo-wap
I over did it at the soda shop
Thanks for being my girl

this is my united states of whatever, just keep the diamonds in my hair
the ups and downs, the days and nights, we wander through the streets in search of what there is to see and do, we start with 6pm champagne and end with 4am pizza, in between we laugh, we see a cute boy in a hotel window take off his pants, we stop by a lower east side bar and find friends and a huge dog inside, we eat a dragon roll in nolita, we're joined by three more, we hit a dive bar, then a depeche mode/cure party, where we dance to "lovecats", and we're joined by two more, then my brother, the posse grows, we roll deep, down avenue b reminscing about save the robots and the junkyard across the street with the motorcycle sculpture, we head to avenue c and get buzzed into speakeasy, we're fake salsa dancing and playing rollercoaster pinball, smoking under the no smoking sign, and when we change locations, the DJ plays joy division as we step inside and we all go, "i love this song" and sing "love will tear us apart... again," and then there are three more outside and two on the way, and we go to someplace else, we shimmy to destiny's child and share beers, three leave and then four show up, someone throws water and that's the cue to move again, outside on the sidewalk there's a walker and some of us use it to get down the street, then there's a split, we dwindle down to four, we hit the boy bar and the straights find try to find a boy for the gay, then it's pizza time, three with cheese, one without, and then a taxi is hailed and four become three, and we find the walker again and leave it hanging on a scaffolding for someone to find, then on 8th street one turns left and three become two, and after a few more blocks it's my turn to go left, homeward, the place i left 20 hours before. then the weekend begins.

boring
this morning on the F train platform, in the yellow zone, close to the edge, a large rat was very calmly eating his breakfast - it appeared to be a small chunk of donut. it was 8:35 am. rush hour. but the rat was ignoring everyone lining up on the platform. stone cold chillin. people were giving the rat a wide berth, but also looking at him like, dude, why aren't you skittering away? as the F train pulled into the station, i half-expected the rat to get on and ride with me to west 4th.

break for love

i'm tired. i'm sick. i'm sick and tired. spring feels like it's never really going to get here. so cold, so cold!
time for a video break.
please enjoy.
young folks... this song is everywhere right now, i think because it feels fresh and happy and not jaded.
sigh, the noisettes are doing *everything* right. this is what my punk band (mittens and valium) will be like when i find some people who play instruments.
matt & kim: can you watch this video and *not* smile?
incidentally, the flosstradamus remix of this track is great too.
last one:
supposed to be seeing placebo tonight if i can stop blowing my nose and feeling like crap.

kiss my asp
watching steven's untitled rock show on fuse is like my porn. boys in bands and rock videos you never see anywhere else. so steven was interviewing socal band saosin and suddenly one of the band members caught my eye. his *lips* caught my eye. guitarist justin shekoski has something i find inexplicably hot - maybe because it draws attention to an inherently sexy spot. justin has snakebite piercings. what's that you say? snakebites should be your new boyfriend??? what a fantastic idea!
okay so let's see what we have here...

justin from saosin.
see also:

mike herrera from mxpx.
i interviewed him at two different warped tours; in addition to being dreamy, he's the nicest guy in the world.
see also:

sonny moore, formerly of from first to last.
okay, that's enough.
team snakebite!
sssssong of the day: duran duran - union of the snake

justin vs. robyn
this is really "what goes around" vs. "konichiwa bitches"
this is tale as old as time. when money and fame don't solve your problems.
justin timberlake made a great album. his videos from futuresex/lovesounds, so far, have been so-so. he dances, he broods, he fondles models, timbaland appears, whatever.
so they decided to ramp it up.
"take it to the next level." hire nick cassavetes. hire scarlett "modern vixen" johansson. hype it up with trailers and a premiere date, and make the video nine minutes long.
and guess what? it sucks and blows when it's not being yawn-inducingly zzzzzzzzz boring.
the plotline doesn't match the song, the acting is terrible, the lighting and the mic make the cars seem anachronistic. it's just not good.
and then there's something like robyn's "konichiwa bitches."
no hype, no hollywood starlet guest stars. just a hilarious, creative, funky monkey little video you fall in love with.
budget for "what goes around"...........$$$$$$$$
budget for "konichiwa"..................................... $$
winner for better video: konichiwa bitches!
please, by all means, if you disagree, say so.
