i'm not wearing anything beneath my poncho*

okay, so i wanted to post some dj sasha crnobrnja up in this piece.

it's a challenge just to spell his name correctly; then i had to pick a track off of stop shopping. also difficult: i really do like 'em all.

this CD is like 3 years old, but i always come back to it. i dig the weird, moody instrumentals that are both organic and electro, rustic and urban. i think the codek people called it "craft-hop." i like the slower, trippy, sexy beats more than the uptempo ones, but it's all good, really. drums, horns, handclaps, bells. it sets a mood.

okay so click here for a sexy track (fun with jute)
and click here for an unptempo jam (ill fitting tunic).

also, you can hear a sample of the kind of stuff he's doing now (in flagranti) by clicking here or here or even here.

*the title of this post is the title of the last track on stop shopping...

backtracking.

Image hosted by TinyPic.com

yeah yeah yeah, i know. long time, no nothin'.

sometimes it beeees like that, nawhatimean?

backtracking:

i had another boozy friday. we started out at kush right after work, at 7pm - drinking and smoking the hookah. peeps from the magazine, celebrating the new issue, plus the brit boxer and the moroccan were in the house. oh, and dj sasha crnobrnja was spinning - what a sweetie*. i used to be a big fan of the organic grooves party in my youth. so many years ago. woe is me.

from kush, half of us hit bembe, where the brazilian DJ named duda was going insane.

but then i got 2 text messages from 2 different boys, and had to high-tail it back to girlhattan and flirt the remaining hours away at orchard bar.

"common people" by blur came on and i was singing the words into this boy's ear:
you'll never watch your life slide out of view
and dance
and drink
and screw,
because there's nothing else to do...

when that boy ran home to his girlfriend i noticed my friend vikram drunkenly slumped at the other end of the bar. we talked for a while and then i dragged myself home at about 4am. i hadn't been home since 8:30 that morning and i was so glad to be in bed.

but i couldn't sleep saturday away. twj came over and did a "queer eye" makeover on my apartment. this took all day saturday and most of sunday, with 2 trips to housing works, bed bath and beyond, and most important, the container store. and now my place feels twice as big, although i have fewer adidas sneakers, crazy hats, 70s fur coats and giltter makeup than i used to. this is called letting go. it sort of feels good.

tomorrow: i'm attending a lost luau.
next week: birthday madness.

*his CD, Stop Shopping Start Crafting, is pretty fucking good. i'll post a track later.

l'afrique, c'est chic.

Image hosted by TinyPic.com

okay so sunday i went to madagascar.
not the country, the movie.

i didn't really read the invitation properly, so i didn't realize it was a premiere and not just a screening. this meant that i was sitting two rows in front of julianne moore and her cute kids, three rows in front of will smith and his gigantic extended family, and not far from ben stiller and his parents anne meara and jerry stiller. also? free popcorn and krispy kreme doughnuts!

the movie was good, fun, but kind of weird. i mean, i know it's for kids, but the way they dealt with the vegetarian vs. carnivore situation was a little unnerving. does no one remember finding nemo?

also, there are 18 million people who actually live on madagascar. but this movie makes you think it's a deserted island. my friend has friends from diego suarez, which is a town on the northern tip. i just love that name.
diego suarez.
it just sounds sexy!

last night i went to a party with my mom at the schomburg. she's a "supporter" of their new exhibit on malcolm x. it was really cool to see old pictures of him when he was a young hustler, before he went to prison. there were also lots of pics of him with his family, just being a dad, or praying in the mosque - which is not how he is usually portrayed. they have tons of his books and letters, too. also, they have drawings by the courtroom artist from the trial of the men who were accused of killing him. the artist was actually there, at the party, which was surreal. so were 2 of malcolm's daughters and one of his grandsons.

while i was standing around drinking zinfandel i did a little anthropological study of the crowd. there are always a few different "types" at these parties:

the buppies - ladies with vuitton bags and straightened hair; gents with crisp suits

the afro-centrics - ladies and gents in djellabas or dashikis, "natural" hair

    the progressive white people

the old skoolers - shabby but sharp gray-haired ladies in bright colors, gents in driving caps or fedoras and jazz-age suits and shoes

(needless to say, i do not fit into any of these categories)

there was also this thirtysomething chick with a white collar on and i just couldn't figure her out: priest or nun?

anyway.

last night i dreamed there was a caged elephant living in my apartment, causing a lot of drama. it was large, thirsty, hungry, and i was thinking, "how did this become my problem???" when i woke up.
job responsibility anxiety, anyone? anyone?

you can kill a man but you can't kiss him.

my baby

i can barely even remember what happened this week.

i know monday i went to the adidas store and wednesday i went back and sealed the deal.

adidas

wednesday i dropped by decibel to visit my friend danny and drink some kind of gin- or sake-based fruity cocktail.

after that i biked down to chinatown where the fashionable henry was having a party.

wednesday @ asia roma

thursday i stayed in and watched my beloved OC.

friday i ended up at bembe. again.

at some point in the last two weeks, orlando was on letterman.

orlando bloom on letterman

i made a lil slide show, which you can see here.

saturday i went to the target open house in soho, which was super cute.

then i went to brooklyn for the basquiat exhbit.

i cannot emphasize enough how AMAZING the show is.
he's one of my heroes.
added bonus? seeing who owns the paintings. some works were from the collections of john mcenroe and peter brant.

today victor/victoria was on TV.

one of my favorite lines:

"the mob doesn't consider homosexuality an acceptable lifestyle."

"ah - kill him, but musn't kiss him."

the kaiser of kool

late mother’s day brunch on Sunday (5/8) my party of 6 and I were at zoĆ« on prince street waiting for our table to be set. who should saunter by in his high-collared shirt, perfectly distressed jeans, oodles of chrome hearts pendants and dark sunglasses but KARL LAGERFELD himself? he was with a posse that included Stephen Gan and some other hot, well-dressed people. of course we had to ask our waiter what mr. lagerfeld was eating. “nothing, basically,” our waiter said, rolling his eyes. “he only eats onions, mushrooms and fish,” we were informed. “oh, and pineapple. he can eat a whole pineapple.” it was thrilling just to be seated near the legend. as he was leaving, we beamed at him and he grimaced back. joy!

so seventies.

raindrops

i know it's so totally seventies, but i love reading my horoscope.

i'll read it from the post and the news and sometimes nerve, but the best, by far, is rob brezsny's freewill astrology.

often poetic, sometimes funny, always thought-provoking.

and this week, my horoscope is so profound i think everyone could benefit, gemini or not:

Gemini Horoscope for week of May 5, 2005
It's time to declare amnesty for the part of you that you don't love very well. Forgive that poor sucker. Hold its hand and take it out to dinner and a movie. Tactfully offer it a chance to make amends for the dumb things it has done. And then do a dramatic reading of this proclamation by the playwright Theodore Rubin: "I must learn to love the fool in me--the one who feels too much, talks too much, takes too many chances, wins sometimes and loses often, lacks self-control, loves and hates, hurts and gets hurt, promises and breaks promises, laughs and cries. It alone protects me against that utterly self-controlled, masterful tyrant whom I also harbor and who would rob me of human aliveness, humility, and dignity but for my fool."

i'm going to buy my inner fool some sugar cookies, and i suggest you do the same.

saturday night i went to se a friend of a friend's band play at luna lounge, met up with some other poeple at 6s and 8s, and then hit kush, where i met the moroccan and stumbled upon the crazy energetic south asian tabla beats of karsh kale and kollektiv and DJ zakhm. the music was sooo fucking good. i think i'll have to buy the CD.
