i drag behind

this is NOT what it looks like outside. this is wishful thinking.

19th street

over the weekend i watched casablanca. this is one of those weird, anomolous, slipped through the crack situations... although i was a screenwriting major and i love classic black and white films, i'd never seen it. and the funny thing is that when harry met sally was on when i was putting the DVD in, and they reference casablanca quite often in that movie.

so it's good. i mean everyone already knows it's good. that's why it's a classic. and you already know half the dialogue, because it gets quoted and thrown around so damn much.

but what struck me was this: they don't end up together. i sort of knew that, but the gravity of it really hit me, maybe because i'd had champagne with brunch. it's one of the "greatest love stories" and there's no happily ever after. and then i tried to think about my other fave love stories, gone with the wind and flirting and um... ok, in charade they end up together. and in amelie. anyway, i just sort of thought to myself, why does so-called true love end? riddle me this, reese and ryan, fedex and brit, scarlett and rhett.

completely unrelated:
warhol sneakers.

here's the song i have on repeat:

it's been a placebo kind of week.

you're always ahead of the game
I drag behind
you never get caught in the rain
when I'm drenched to the bone every time
you're the first one to swim across the Seine
I lag behind
you're always ahead of the game
while I drag behind...

you're always ahead of the pack
I drag behind
you possess every trait that I lack
by coincidence or by design
you're the monkey I got on my back
that tells me to shine
you're always ahead of the pack
while I drag behind...

you're always ahead of the rest
when I'm always on time
you got A's on your algebra test
I failed and they kept me behind
I just gotta get off my chest
that I think you're divine
you're always ahead of the rest
while I drag behind...

nobody's lost but nobody wins

and all this like a message comes to shift my point of view

rivington st

trinket of the day:

coffee & cigarettes ring

obligatory youtube linkage of the day:

a friend in need's a friend indeed,
a friend with weed is better...
a friend with breasts and all the rest,
a friend who's dressed in leather
(old placebo) aka cool shit

they tried to make me go to rehab but i said no, no, no (new amy winehouse) aka hot shit, plus a horn section

faith sfx - oh my
like on david letterman, when he goes, is this anything? and the curtian goes up on something random. i watch this like, i honestly don't know what i'm looking at (or listening to) but it's not bad. it's something. hint: it's high energy grime-y frenetic beatboxing from the uk. for starters.

between the clock change, the darkness, the cold then warm then cold, the post-trip trauma, hormones, the full moon on sunday and intense, severe job dissatisfaction, i'm feeling super low these days. i just want to lie on the floor and listen to the smiths. or sleep by azure ray. over and over.

is there anyone out there reading this?

what do you think my new job should be?

when we were in L.A., we were discussing our love of words, especially words that don't exsist but should and portmanteau words, a la lewis carroll, where you smush two words together to make a new one, like brunch.

we were having this conversation in a gorgeous restaurant, and the bus boy came over to our table with bread and oil. he proceeded to spill the oil all over the table and a menu as he set it down. he went away and came back with a towel to wipe up the oil and rubbed too hard on the menu and ruined the plastic cover as well as the paper underneath.

"what is going on with this guy?" one of us asked.

"he's stumsy," jaime said.

and now stumsy's part of my lexicon, and ever so appropriate for how i feel about the fact that i have a crushing crush. my stumsy heart aches.

dessert & design

last night i had dinner - and more importantly, dessert - at morimoto.

a few years ago i went to the one in philadelphia (with interiors by karim rashid) and had one of the most exquisite dining experiences of my life: omokase.

the new york location is designed by tadao ando. the food did not disappoint.

while i was in LA i saw a guy in a shirt that said GOT LAND? on the front and THANK AN INDIAN on the back. that, my friends, is what i want to wear to thanksgiving dinner. looking for one as we speak.

lucha vavoom

lucha vavoom

that night we went to lucha vavoom at the mayan theater downtown.

lucha vavoom was insane and amazing. masked mexican wrestling, midgets, burlesque stripping - snow white stripped, as did and evil queen and a beautiful girl who turned out to be a boy - karis. absolutely phenomenal hula hoop skills.

the show ended with a guy dressed as louis xvi stripping while bouncing on a pogo stick. each time he took off a g string, glitter flew out and there was another g string underneath.

poogene happened to be landing in L.A. the same night, so he joined us there.

friday morning we drove over to sunset blvd and had breakfast @ the griddle with poogene.

percy

percy is "morbidly obese" according to jd. also a camera slut.

hamburger mary's

so we went to hamburger mary's to wait for everyone to get their shit together. $5 margaritas and $5 martinis. plus the loo has a disco ball and a boombox that only plays abba.

big margarita

you could raise a goldfish in the margarita glass.

big martini

the martinis were big as well. this was a double, i think. hrh proclaimed that it wasn't dirty enough.

hellaylaw needed brackets for his closet, so haflway through the drag xxtravaganza we got in the car and drove to the 24 hour home depot. only to find it closed. it's not open 24 hours anymore.

compton cheerleading

sunday: breakfast at basix, ran into poogene there. did some thrift store shopping and went to the melrose trading post/fairfax high flea market. the purchase of the day was a compton cheerleading t-shirt, which i was going to bring back to new york, but it looked good on hellaylaw so i had to give it to him.

in n out

after some in-n-out burger we flew out on the red eye, arriving in new york just as we left - sunrise, aka the dawn of crack.

i've edited some stuff out, but maybe not enough. file complaints below or at girlhattan at gmail dot com.
